Here's the Process to Begin Your Emotional Healing Journey...Even If You Feel Completely Broken

sad man beginning emotional healing journey

Some days life is just plain hard. You just want to stay in bed and avoid facing the pain of another day.

Are you feeling discouraged? Have things not worked out the way you hoped? Are you tempted to throw in the towel and say ‘I quit’?

It’s a terrible feeling and place to be. Feelings of disappointment combined with frustration, helplessness and sadness can weigh your heart down. You have a broken heart. And it needs to heal.

My friend, you’re not alone. As awful as what you’re going through may feel, it will pass. It may not be today or tomorrow, but your joy will be restored and you will find emotional healing.

The First Steps Towards Emotional Healing

Your path to emotional healing starts by recognizing and acknowledging your emotions.

Your feelings matter, and they need to be witnessed and cared for. If you’re feeling discouraged, begin by acknowledging and identifying your emotions. Offer yourself kind words of compassion:

“Self, I know you’re feeling (insert uncomfortable emotion) and I’m here for you. I choose to be kind to myself as I go through this hard time. I am not alone in this moment of suffering. This is what it means to be human.”

It’s also important to process your emotions out loud with someone with someone you trust—a friend, counselor, or coach. They can bring helpful perspective when you get trapped in your head – overthinking things in an endless loop.

As hard as the moment or even the season you may be in, nothing lasts forever.

The Power of Prayer in Overcoming Discouragement

There is never a time when it isn’t the right time to pray. God says, “pray without ceasing.”

So when are you invited to pray? All the time.

Go to God and express your raw emotions to Him. The Psalms are filled with heartfelt cries, affirming that you can be genuine in your conversations with Him. Let your feelings flow, whether it's through tears or words. He loves and understands you and is there to comfort you and help you take your next step out of the pain.

Does it help to know God really cares about what you care about? Papa God loves it when you choose to bring anything and everything to Him. So don’t hold back out of fear of “bugging” Him with your trouble. His patience, grace, provision and protection is limitless. He also loves to celebrate with you in the good times, too.

Put your hand over your heart, take a deep breath and say, “I believe better days are ahead. God’s got me. I am an overcomer. I choose to take one baby step forward.

The Message that Changes Everything

On Good Friday over 2000 years ago, Jesus experienced physical torture, the betrayal of His friends, the scorn and judgment of His peers and community, and the ultimate pain, the withdrawal of His Father’s presence.

He hung on a cross, paying for sins He never committed. Not because He didn’t have a choice. But because He knew the only way for you to have hope for eternal life was for Him to sacrifice Himself on that cross.

Without His payment for your sins, there would be no hope for the pain you’re in today.

His journey wasn't just about the physical pain but also about experiencing intense emotional anguish. This sacrifice was made out of profound love—for you. This act demonstrates that you are valued, understood, and never truly alone in your suffering.

Why? Because you matter.

Plain and simple. You are loved by a perfect God who walks with you through every painful, terrible, unjust moment of your life. He “gets” your pain and discouragement. He isn’t holding out on you. He hasn’t turned His back on you even if others have.

His arms stretched out on that cross is your reminder that they are open to you.

He is inviting you to put your hope in Him. That strength you need right now for emotional healing, He’s got and wants you to receive. Take what’s been burdening your heart and soul to the foot of the cross. He’s waiting for you there. Give it to Him.

The resurrection is your reminder that the darkness you’re in is temporary. God has the final word.

Put your hope in Jesus. His undying love for you provides the strength you need to take your next step. And the one after that.

He is with you and for you. Always and forever.

As you embark on your journey of emotional healing, remember that with faith, support, and self-compassion, you're equipped to overcome the challenges ahead.
